A powerful novel of a British family reunited after World War II that has been hailed as “a small classic, deeply touching and true” (Publishers Weekly).

In the spring of 1946, Sam Richardson is a returning soldier, back in his hometown of Wigton, England, after serving in the jungles of Burma. Waiting for him are his relieved young wife, Ellen, and six-year-old son, Joe. Little has changed in Wigton. The neighbors are still familiar, the winding alleyways are still a labyrinth—and there are still few prospects for an uneducated working-class man like Sam.

But years of war have left Sam wanting something more. Though plagued by memories of his combat experiences, he is also a far worldlier and more ambitious man than he once was. And he soon discovers to his dismay that Ellen, emboldened by years of working for survival, has also evolved beyond what is expected of a modest housewife. Yet more difficult to bear is the fact that the son he has lovingly thought of for so long barely remembers him.

As all three strive to adjust, the bonds of love and loyalty are stretched to the breaking point, in this taut and profoundly moving novel, a winner of the WH Smith Literary Award, that tells “with delicacy and remarkable strength about rural England’s struggle to return to the security of a past forever changed by the war” (Library Journal).

“A novel written in fine steel sentences and granite paragraphs.” —The Washington Post Book World

“His straightforward prose and the measured pace of his writing allow readers to savor every nuance of life in a small town in postwar England, and the depth and reality of his characters and his ability to bring the horrors of war alive are nothing short of brilliant. An impressive performance, not to be missed.” —Booklist, starred review

The Soldier Return edition by Melvyn Bragg Literature Fiction eBooks

The parts about Burma, and the reunion of the soldiers were good. Unfortunately, I had a difficult time with Sam's wife, Ellen, and their son, Joe. Ellen obviously had a difficult time during the war, but she didn't seem to be willing to meet Sam half way in looking for solutions to their problems. Joe was irritating to say the least. Talk about an Oedipus Complex! I believe Joe is the focus of the 2nd book in the trilogy too so I doubt that I will read it.

The Soldier Return edition by Melvyn Bragg Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Based on the reader reviews, Bragg is not well known, but those who have read him are impressed. In this book, his portrayal of the people in the north of England is masterful. They exemplify what Flannery O'Connor said about her family that the only emotion they allowed themselves to express was anger. Loving, forgiving, and understanding thoughts run through the minds of both Sam and Ellen, but their expression is stifled in the hard atmosphere of their home town. They are at an impasse trying to decide whether to try to re-establish their lives in the familiar but devastated town or to risk everything for opportunity in Australia.

England took a long time to recover after WWII, and the efforts of Bragg's characters to put the deprivations and horrors of the war behind them are poignant. In 1946 rations were still short, housing was scarce, job opportunities demoralizing. After coming of age and proving himself in the jungles of Burma, Sam finds himself adrift without so much as a pat on the back. Ellen too has grown during her husband's absence, working, raising her young son, and finding support from an ad hoc family. She finds that Sam's return, which she's longed for for four years, doesn't automatically set things right.

The reader is rooting for these obviously intelligent and capable people. Their ultimate decision, literally the last gasp of the book, leaves the reader wanting the rest of the story. And there is a sequel I'm anxious to read.
I only read about half the book. It just did not keep my interest. It definitely is not a book for leisure reading.
very enjoyable
Good characters involved
Copy reflects an accurate description.
Well written, true to life, epitomises the Victorian attitude that you must not show your feelings. The problem of soldiers returning is even now not really understood by people who have not been involved, whilst set in the North of England the problems encountered translate to anywhere where soldiers return from conflict. Once into it could not put it down.
I did actually read the entire book, though I kept wondering why. Someone should have edited this book to 1/3 its length, and insisted the author give more resolution at the end. The entire plot was the slowly growing angst, and the resolution never happened except abruptly in the last few paragraphs. I did enjoy the setting, but so not worth the time investment. Sorry.
An excellent book and one that I think is an important one as it describes the story of a man coming home from the war and trying to readjust to his old life. Much of it is painful to read and it brought to mind stories of many of today's soldiers returning from foreign conflicts and the demons that haunt them and their families. Suspensful up to the very end.
